Compare and Contrast Poems by Sassoon and by Owen, how they bring out their treatment of war Paper The horror of war influenced these two great poets to express their disgust in poems. They both, however use contrasting styles: Owen chooses to express his disgust and anger through poems that give the reader a precise picture of what the war was really like; whereas Sassoon was an officer who protested against the way that war was being portrayed at the time. Like Owen, he wrote poems that scorned people like Jessie Pope, who glorified war. Sassoon, who came from a privileged background, showed that after going to fight and getting an award for bravery, he hated war. After writing a public protest, he wrote poems that had a cutting sarcasm, which were intended to attack the officers with pejorative language. In It Doesnt Matter he uses sarcasm to great effect, mimicking the voice used by people when a soldier perhaps doesnt want to fight and they are trying to persuade him. The line Theres such splendid work for the blind; is particularly hard-hitting because it is fiercely telling the reader in a heavily laden sarcastic tone, that it is fine to have ones eyes taken away because there is good care for the blind, of course he actually means that it is not fine to have your eyes taken in war because of the pain and misery that will be suffered; Owen on the other hand, in Disabled chooses to show the harsh reality upfront. legless, sewn short at the elbow tells us exactly how the man is. Sassoon helped Owen write some poems but Owen kept his style of creating, what can only be described as, brilliant, truthful and vivid imagery. This was most evident in Dulce et Decorum est when Sassoon helped Owen out. The poor boy who committed suicide put a bullet through his brain because of the constant crumps and lice and lack of rum. It seems that he has gone mad. I personally think that if I was an officer reading Sassoons work, I would feel extremely guilty because I would probably be one of those who glorified war thinking that it didnt matter if people lost legs, because people will always be kind. But if I was a sixteen year old wanting to join the army to impress my girlfriend, and I read Owens accounts of the trenches, I would most certainly reconsider joining up.

People should be able to believe what they want to freely and openly. We shouldnt tell people what they have to believe and prosecute them if they dont. I would keep this right if I could go back and do it again. The right to a peaceful protest is also a good right. I think it can last, not to mention the fact that it gives the people a say in their government. If we think something is unjust, we need to be able to speak out against it. I would definitely keep this right. The right to gay and straight marriages was an interesting motion. I thought there was going to be a bigger discussion, but either those opposed to it did not speak, or there were very few people opposed to it. I dont think it is a good right or restriction. I do think it will last because it will be one more freedom that people will have, but some homosexuals still might not want to come out of the closet because of the ridicule they might receive. I dont, however, want this law to be in effect. Ive been trying to think of why I dont want the law, but I cant think of a democratic reason other than marriage is a union between a male and a female. The people who are in favor of this law are not asking for the same rights as heterosexuals, they are asking for an additional right. They have the right to a straight marriage, just like everybody else, but they want to marry someone who is of their own sex, which is not a right that everybody has or should have. The Three Flags Whenever I go into my bedroom, I see three large flags. One drapes the stairs and two cover the walls. If I take the time to notice them, I can’t help but smile. These flags are the national coat of arms of Germany; Germany’s greatest state Bavaria; and the national flag of Austria. The three of them serve to remind me of the summer of my junior year. During that summer I went on a class trip to Germany and Austria. These flags have become the greatest souvenirs of the trip. When I returned, I hung them carelessly to avoid finding an appropriate storage place. Now their presence is important for the good memories of that summer that they bring to my mind. I never had the opportunity to travel abroad as a young boy, so the European trip was extremely important to me. It was the first time I was without the supervision of my puritan parents and I remember it as if it were yesterday. All my closest friends from that period in my life were along on the trip. The shared experiences of our lives at school continued that summer, during what was a great adventure for us all. When my present life provides me with a moment to reflect I look at those flags and remember a great experience and great friends. I think not only of Germany, but also of other universities, other colleges, and even boot camps that have become the homes for those who shared my life and shared that summer. It’s difficult to casually walk by those three flags these days and briefly reminisce over the memories they evoke. Too often I find myself staring for a minute, then sitting down in my room to revisit the joy in my mind.
